【摘要】We set up a model of oshoring with heterogeneous producers that captures two empiricalregularities on oshoring firms: larger, more productive firms are more likely to make useof the oshoring opportunity; the fraction of firms that engages in oshoring is positive andsmaller than one in any size or revenue category. These patterns generate an overlap ofoshoring and non-oshoring firms, which is non-monotonic in the costs of oshoring. Inan empirical exercise, we employ firm-level data from Germany to estimate key parametersof the model. We show that ignoring the overlap leads to a severe downward bias in theestimated gains from oshoring, which amounts to almost 60 percent in our model.
