【摘 要】How does product expansion via imitation promote economic growth in a closed economy? To answer this question, I develop a quantitative multi-product framework of creative destruction and imitation. The model enables firms to innovate or imitate production technology to expand their knowledge base in various technology trajectories. Subsequently, the knowledge base serves as an input for new innovation or imitation. Fitting the model to Chinese manufacturing data, the profitability distribution provides identifications on competition due to imitation. The results suggest that two-thirds of the private knowledge in individual firms is generated by the non-rivalry of knowledge. Finally, the simulation of reduction in imitation costs aligns qualitatively with many empirical observations between 2000 and 2007. Unlike in single-product models, larger firms with greater knowledge capital exhibit higher efficiency for product expansion.
