【摘 要】We study how proprietary data and software affect knowledge creation and diffusion. We find empirical evidence that, while they are an increasingly important input for knowledge creation in modern economies, they create a barrier to knowledge diffusion and widen the knowledge gap between productive and less productive firms. We propose an endogenous growth model of knowledge creation and diffusion across heterogeneous firms to account for the empirical findings. In the model, data and software improves the quality of ideas being created but, as a secret input, it makes it harder for other firms to learn from these ideas. As the cost of developing data and software decreases, the model predicts that the knowledge gap between firms widens, knowledge diffusion slows, and economic growth could decrease.
