【摘要】Considering the notable urban-rural income gap in developing countries, why don't more people from rural regions move into cities? Leveraging the policy shock of China's 1988 Salt Regie System (SRS), which eradicates a critical endemic disease (iodine deficiency disorders), this study provides the first causal evidence of endemic disease on rural-urban migration. Based on a county-level disease dataset and population census, this paper shows that SRS increases rural-urban migration by 0.57%, equating to about 2 million new migrants. Rural residents have experienced notable enhancements in health and intelligence, accompanied by reduced physical disabilities. These improvements result in increased educational levels and reduced labor market discrimination. It also leads to non-agricultural employment growth. The SRS has generated at least $155 billion in benefits, even if we only consider the benefits of rural-urban migration.
