Question. How innovation could transform the Chinese economy in the long term and how it could spread beyond just the tech sector? There is a start up boom in China, but the reality is that very few will in fact succeed. So what’s your advice to youths who are thinking about starting their own businesses? And how can the government help to support their endeavors.

Answers: Developing the wrong kind of innovation hurts China in the longer-term. Besides labor and capital, according to mainstream economics, technological drive is the key to long-term growth. Now labor costs in China are no longer that cheap. Better technologies are needed to reduce labor costs. Deciding what innovation to develop at what time should obey comparative advantage plus some nuances. There are millions of scientists in China. That size alone explains why the Chinese had already caught up in almost every kind of innovation that required gradual but not abrupt improvements. So every aspect of life has been improved. Many citizens live in excellent buildings in China. No countries can easily win a bid against China now in construction projects if done in a fair manner. Of course not every one will succeed in innovation. Only a few young people who follow their dreams will become billionaires but all should be proud if they have tried really hard. Abrupt breakthrough requires solid training. The reform in the rigid Chinese university system is the key to help us catch up with the West for innovation that requires abrupt breakthrough.
