【摘要】The literature often shows that bilateral gift exchange can benefit the gift giver. This study employs a two-giver-one-recipient real task gift exchange game to investigate the effect of gift competition. We show that gift competition hurts givers and benefits recipients due to increased unpaid gift. Further analysis suggests that this is not due to givers’ belief errors about the payoff matrix, but rather due to negative externality inherent in recipients’ responding function. Structural estimation suggests that such externality comes from both resource constraint and preference change: recipients reduce the utility weight attached to the low-gift giver.
