【摘要】This paper discusses how trade openness affects welfare when factor markets are distorted. It incorporates a traditional agriculture sector into the international trade literature with heterogeneous firms, search and matching frictions and multiple asymmetric regions in terms of their geographical locations. The model predicts that a reduction in trade impediments reallocates market share towards more productive producers, encourages firms to post more vacancies, and induces workers to migrate to the manufacturing sector and towards the coastal regions. In addition, by comparing the decentralized competitive equilibrium with the socially optimal solution, I show that in the model calibrated to match the economic statistics in China, a fall in trade barriers exacerbates the inefficiency of labor market tightness within the manufacturing sector but reduces the inefficiency of employment share across sectors. This implies potential welfare gains from trade through affecting labor market efficiency.
