【摘要】China's overseas patents grew rapidly in recent years. Meanwhile China has become the largest merchandise goods exporter worldwide. By merging Chinese exporters with their overseas patents, this paper studies how overseas patents facilitate Chinese firms' exports. Export values are found to be positively associated with exporters' patents granted by export destination countries, and this association is mainly driven by the positive correlation with export quantities rather than prices. Furthermore, the positive relationships with export values and quantities mainly take effects when the stock of patents issued by destination countries are concentrated in small numbers of non-Chinese firms. These results suggest that patents effective in export destination countries allow Chinese firms to expand sales because the litigation risk of patent infringement becomes lower.
