【摘要】This paper studies how changes in the status inheritance rules a ffect intrahouseholdresource allocation. This question is analyzed in the context of a reform occurring inChina that granted men the same rights as women in passing on hukou (residencypermits) to their children regardless of their spouses' hukou. This reform decreasedthe relative position of women with privileged local hukou in the marriage market. Wefind that female-favored consumption in the existing local-local marriages negativelyresponded to this change. This fi nding is robust to diff erent tests. We also showthat parents' caring about prospective children's status combined with the probabilityof getting divorced is the key channel through which the reform aff ected the intra-household resource allocation.
