【摘要】This paper derives a structural gravity equation system where the time-varying multilateral resistance terms can be represented by a function of trade flows. This system overcomes a specification problem on the multilateral resistance terms in the literature, and can be estimated by the spatial panel method. We study European monetary union effect on trade to illustrate the methodology and find that the currency union promotes trade modestly. We also find that trade responds several years ahead of EMU implementation, even before the debate on EMU in June 1988.
