【摘要】Compared to rich countries, the degree of specialization within agriculture is substan-tially lower in poor countries. This paper studies the possible causes of these largedifferences in agricultural specialization and how they contribute to the observed percapita income gap between rich and poor countries. I find that poor countries havesubstantially higher internal trade costs, which prevent farms in poor countries fromspecializing in their comparative advantage goods. Differences in trade costs increaseproductivity difference between rich and poor countries by more than a factor of threein agriculture and up to 180% in aggregate economy
