【摘要】This paper investigates the effect of hierarchy leadership and social comparison on prosocial behavior in a setting of sequential charitable giving. The model shows that the follower (second mover) responds to the leader's (first mover's) giving conditional on the relative social status between the follower and the leader. We test this prediction by designing a field experiment that varies the distance in the social status between the leader and the follower. The empirical findings show that the follower's giving critically depends on his social relationship with the leader. The follower's giving responds non-monotonically to the leader's giving when the leader possesses actually hierarchy leadship or is a colleague of the follower, but it is less responsive when the leader is a stranger. With the presence of hierarchy leadership, it discourages the follower's giving when the leader gives a relatively small amount ($10 or $20) but increases the follower's giving when the leader gives a large amount ($50 or $100). The follower's average giving is the highest when he is only informed that the leader is one of his colleagues.
