【摘要】Theoretical work has well illustrated that conflict is the result of commitment problems arising from weak contract enforcement environment. However, the effect of commitment on conflict has barely been empirically examined. This paper fills this gap by using historical Chinese data on heqin (royal marriage) between nomadic and settled Han majority. We argue that intermarriage severs as an import commitment in the absence of a third-party enforcer. We find that heqin brings out a significant decrease in the probability of coming inter-ethnic conflicts, the effects is even larger for princess engaged into the marriage, for nomadic attacks.
