【摘要】In this paper I study whether and how past working history would affect wages when learning about workers' abilities is asymmetric between incumbent firms and outside firms. I first present a three-period asymmetric employer learning model incorporating a worker-firm specific match quality component. Introducing a third period enables me to explore the signalling effect of working history on wages. New empirical tests for asymmetric employer learning are then proposed and conducted in the NLSY79 data. In general, employer learning appears to be asymmetric for college graduates---their wages are significantly correlated with working history with past firms. For high school graduates employer learning seems more likely symmetric. Welfare loss associated with inefficient turnovers is also discussed.
