【摘要】A model of sequential innovation is constructed to investigate the interaction between lagging breadth and patentability requirement. We show that lagging breadth and patentability requirement are complementary---optimal patentability requirement rises with lagging breadth. We also show how the effects of patentability requirement on innovation may change with the intensity of competition from imitators, with the size of innovation, and with the nature of innovation cost. Given lagging breadth, patentability requirement stifles innovation when innovation is drastic, whereas there is an inverted-U shape relationship between patentability requirement and innovation when innovation is non-drastic.
