【摘要】To compete or not to compete underpins much of our social behavior, from dating and marriage to all-important career choices and job promotions. To better understand these issues, we examined the role of endocrine stress systems including cortisol and alpha-amylase in competitiveness. Adopting the experimental design of Niederle and Vesterlund (2007), we measured salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase response during both piece-rate and tournament tasks as well as cortisol awakening response. Subjects with higher response of cortisol and alpha-amylase in the tasks, and higher cortisol awakening response were more competitive. Moreover we did not observe significant interaction effects between cortisol and alpha-amylase response and Gender.
