【摘要】This paper explores systematically the relationship between the scope of a firm's trade activity (the number of product and country specific varieties) and its performance considering imports and exports within the same framework. We start from a simple theoretical model in which heterogeneous firms choose between sourcing domestically or importing from abroad on top of exporting, and incur fixed costs that are directly proportional to the scope of a firm's trade activity. The implications of the model in terms of self-selection are consistent with a number of stylized facts that we derive using the universe of Hungarian firm-product-destination level data over a ten year horizon (1993-2002). The results are robust to an econometric validation including a number of controls on the different characteristics of the firms' traded products and destinations.
