【摘要】This article studies the effect of Hukou system (household registration) on household consumption of China. Based on the dataset of Chinese Household Income Project Survey (CHIPS), we find the marginal propensity to consume of migrants without local urban Hukou is about 14.6% lower than that of urban residents. Further studies on the compositions of household consumption show the gaps in marginal propensity to consume are larger on terms such as education and culture, durable goods, and health. With careful analysis, we find the consumption heterogeneity is mainly explained by the Hukou system, but not by other factors like culture or habits.
