【摘要】The growth of high-skill jobs has stagnated in the U.S. since the mid-1990s. We provide empirical evidence that software and equipment usage is related to whether an occupation is more cognitive or routine, and propose a model of endogenous technological change that explains both employment share and software innovation trends. In the model, equipment-embodied technological change reduces the demand for routine tasks that require more intensive usage of equipment. Hence, the demand for equipment decreases, endogenously leading to a rise in software innovation. This rise, in turn, generates a reversal in the demand for skill. The model explains roughly two-thrids of the rise of software innovation and skill demand reversal in the data.
