【摘要】This paper proposes and tests a new channel through which a trade surplus may lead to increased health hazard and hence reduce welfare. A trade surplus tends to alter the shipping cost of imports, leading to more imports of industrial waste than otherwise the case. If the importing country has a weak environmental standard or weak enforcement, this will lead to more pollution and more health problems. We show evidence consistent with these predictions.
【讲员简介】魏尚进教授为美国哥伦比亚大学商学院金融学和经济学教授，是国际金融、贸易、宏观经济和中国问题研究方面的著名学者，孙冶方奖获得者。曾任亚洲开发银行（ADB）首位华人首席经济学家，并且担任或曾经担任美国国民经济研究局（NBER）中国经济研究组主任、美国布鲁金斯学会（Brookings Institution）高级研究员、国际货币基金组织（IMF）研究主管、世界银行（WB）顾问等职务。另外，魏尚进教授还担任或曾任Journal of Development Economics， Journal of International Economics，Journal of Comparative Economics、Journal of International Financial Markets、Institutions & Money等学术期刊的副主编和The China Economic Review的顾问编委
